A section of the students claimed that the college had announced indefinite closure of the institution for students from first year to third year and had asked them to vacate the hostel.
TNAU Vice Chancellor K. Ramasamy said, “Students had sought permission only for a day.” Meanwhile, the university has announced indefinite closure of the institution till normalcy returns.
This is because 87 per cent of our students are girls and we have to ensure their safety, the university said in a release.
“The governments have failed to protect farmers. We don’t want to make it a students’ protest. We want the public too to fight for farmers’ cause,” a protester said. They said that a decision to launch an indefinite strike was taken on Sunday night. They began the protest at the main entrance of the university from 8 am on Monday.
Students said that it was the duty of the union government to waive off farm loans and to sanction adequate relief to help the farmers survive the loss they incurred due to drought and prevent them from resorting to the extreme step.
