The officials also recovered 178 sovereigns of gold jewellery from the trio.
Police said the arrested - M Riyazudeen (25), F Azarudeen (24) and P Vijayakumar (24) of Coimbatore - had robbed jewellery shop owner off 4.3 kg of gold at knife point at Raja Street in Coimbatore last month.
“The trio was travelling by bus. A police team, conducting checks got suspicious and started questioning the three men. This led to them confessing to the robbery,” Erode District Superintendent of Police R Sivakumar told DTNext.
Sivakumar said the district police had intensified vehicle checks in the Coimbatore-Karnataka border following a tip off that liquor was being smuggled into Tamil Nadu from the neighbouring state following the closure of TASMAC shops on highways based on a Supreme Court order.
“The vehicle checks actually helped us crack the case,” he said.
