The action was taken based on a report from the vigilance department that several employees had not been transferred for over 12 years. The report stated that they had been working in the same place for a long time against the service rules.

However, the transfer had irked the union members who had a cold war with the higher officials over corruption charges allegedly levelled against the employees. The officials said that the Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs), Enquiry cum Reservation Clerk (EREC) and Commercial Clerk (CE) were the three categories in which the transfers took place in the Tiruchy Railway Division as per the orders of Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Arun Thomas.

Out of the total employees transferred, as many as 131 CEs were shifted out. In the EREC category 16 persons were served with transfer orders and in the TTEs wing the orders were issued to 154 employees. All the transferred staff were asked to report for duty in their new posts before April 7, the order stated. However, the order had left workers attached to a particular union in shock.

It was said, the transfers were periodical and for a long period no such transfers were made in the division. This also led to imbalance in deployment of staff.
