Tiruchy facility rolls out 500th locomotive for non-railway client

With Thursday’s despatch, meant for NTPC, a non-railway customer the workshop has earned revenue to the tune of Rs 471 crore so far from the non-railway customer segment. In 2016-17 alone, the earnings have crossed Rs 44 crore. 

According to sources, the Golden Rock Railway Workshop, one of the oldest facilities in the country, has so far despatched 500 locos for non-railway customers, including entities like SAIL, NTPC and exports locos like RITES and IRCON. Out of the total consignments, 338 locos were sent for PSUs and 139 for exports locos. Similarly, over 45 container flat wagons built at Rs 30 lakh were also handed over to CONCOR. 

Officials said that the manufacture for CONCOR had commenced at the workshop in 2003 and so far, 4820 BLC (bogie low container) wagons have been built and despatched. 

Johri, who flagged off the despatch, said that the railways has been requesting the support of the state government for the doubling of Chennai-Kannyakumari sector but they have not received a response so far.
