A protest was organised by Puthiya Tamilagam at Rameswaram bus stand, and during the protest Krishnasamy claimed that recently a 21- year old fishermen Bridjo was shot dead while he was fishing in mid- sea. The prime reason for the attack and arrest of fishermen is the ceding of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka.

To end all the problems, the Centre should take steps to facilitate deep sea fishing. At present, the boats used by fishermen --which cost about Rs 25 lakhs --are not suitable for deep sea fishing and hence, large boats should be provided to them.

The cost of the large boats would come around Rs 1 crore and the fishermen cannot afford such a huge amount, said Krishnasamy. Hence, the Union government should provide the boats for the fishermen with 100 percent subsidy. The Centre should set up a Ministry of Fishing for the welfare of fishermen as the state government is not particularly keen on their welfare, alleged Krishnasamy.
