Following the apprehension of six Karaikal fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy on charges of smuggling drugs on April 2, it was decided to strike work and protests began last week.
Meanwhile, five other coastal district fishermen visited the Karaikal protesters on Wednesday and raised slogans against the Union, State, UT and SL Governments.
On Wednesday, over 500 fishermen from Pudukkottai kept off shore to show their solidarity towards their protesting counterparts in Karaikal. Over 500 mechanised boats are anchored in Pudukkottai. They claimed that the Sri Lanka Navy kept slapping false charges against them. The fishermen said that they had also represented their case to the Centre.
