At Salem, residents of Alamarathukkadu near Five Roads in the city damaged liquor bottles from a TASMAC outlet when the first consigment arrived on Monday morning.
Based on the Supreme Court direction the shop functioning at Five Roads was closed and the officials concerned identified the shop at the nearby Alamarathukkadu area to relocate it. The residents staged a protest, following which the TASMAC officials and the police gave them an assurance that the shop would not be opened there. However, on Monday, residents were irked to see a liquor laden truck unloading the stock there. Agitated women and residents threw the cases on the road. Pallapatti police detained five women in connection with the incident and interrogated them.
In Coimbatore, more than five groups of residents from different parts of the city and district picketed the District Collectorate seeking closure of TASMAC outlets and submitted representations to the collector.
Officials assured to close the shop at Nagarajapuram in Coimbatore in 15 days following strong protests by residents along with members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association who picketed the shop on Monday.
