Police said, S Madhan Raj (22), a fisherman from Meenavar Colony of Poompuhar, was reportedly in love with G Durga (17), of the same locality. Durga used to be active on Facebook and on Saturday also she was chatting with one of her friends. Raj, who came there, suspected that she was chatting with another man and became furious. In a fit of rage, he took a boulder and hit her. Durga succumbed to injuries on the spot.

Initial investigations revealed that Durga, a first year engineering student, had come to her native place to spend the summer vacation and had reached Mayiladuthurai during the wee hours of Friday. Raj had come to receive her and they were on their way to Poompuhar. At this point, Raj checked her Facebook account in which he reportedly found that the girl had been chatting with several others, including her male classmates. This infuriated him and he killed her.

Subsequently, Raj went to Poompuhar police station and confessed to the crime before surrendering himself. The police recovered Durga’s body and sent it for post-mortem. Raj was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.
