Madurai is the largest city in the southern district and thousands of people visit the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple and other tourist spots on a daily basis. People from far and wide come to Madurai GRH for medical check ups as well.
As hotels around the tourist spots and hospital charge exorbitantly for food, most people go hungry. To prevent this, Madurai Corporation has initiated the new programme wherein food would be distributed among the needy for free.
The initiative was launched with the help of the NGO, Palakarangal, as a pilot scheme at Madurai GRH.
Over 15 sponsors have donated to the cause. A food stall would be set up at GRH and lunch would be provided for free. “Others too can donate money for the food which is charged at Rs 50 for two people,” Corporation Commissioner Sandeep Nandur said.
