The event was led by the TNCC president S Thirunavukkarasar. On April 30, 1930, immediately after the Dandi march, C Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji, had picked up salt at Vedaranyam defying the draconian British salt tax. Rajaji, who was the last Governor General of India, had organised the march from Tiruchy to Vedaranyam.
Every year, the salt satyagraha is observed at Vedaranyam on April 30. The marchers, wearing Khadi outfits and singing patriotic songs, picked up salt and paid floral tributes to freedom fighters at the end of the march. Earlier, as a mark of re-enacting the Vedaranyam March, Congress cadre began a padayatra from Tiruchy on April 13.
They reached Vedaranyam via Thiruvaiyaru, Kumbakonam, Mannargudi and Thiruthuraipoondi.
