In the drought review meeting, Sellur Raju said that Madurai Corporation with an area of 148 square km has a population of 17 lakh. On a daily basis around 2.5 lakh people visit Madurai. Now the Chithirai festival has commenced and lakhs of people visit Madurai to participate in the Chithirai festival.

Daily water requirement for Madurai Corporation on a normal day is 127 mld but from May 1 only 94.93 mldd of water will be supplied. As the water flow is set to decrease in the coming days, the corporation will be given 60 litres per head per day.

Though 1950 bore wells have good water supply presently, scarcity will set in soon.

The corporation will be left with no other option but to procure the precious commodity from private suppliers.

The corporation must also turn to tanker lorries to provide water to people. Residents must be informed in advance about the supply to their area, said Sellur Raju.

State Revenue Minister, RB Udayakumar, Madurai North Constituency MLA, Rajan Chellappa, Tirupparakundram MLA, AK Bose, along with Corporation Officials were present at the drought review meeting.
