Close shave for maxi cab passengers on Pamban bridge

The passengers, who escaped with minor injuries, belonged to the same family and had rented a tourist maxi cab from Kalingathur village near Arupukkottai in Virudhunagar district. They started on their journey for Rameswaran in the wee hours of Sunday. 

As road laying works were being carried out on the Pamban bridge, vehicular movement was regulated. According to sources, the driver was in a drowsy state and did not notice the road restoration. In a bid to avoid the ongoing works, he steered the maxi cab to the right and hit a poll before ramming the parapet. In the impact, the maxi cab damaged the parapet and the front portion of the maxi cab was dangling over the edge of the bridge. Luckily, a poll that got lodged into the left front tyre prevented the vehicle from falling into the ocean. 

The passengers were safely evacuated and the injured were taken to Rameswaram GH. Similarly, in the evening, a TNSTC bus rammed a parapet at the entry point of Pamban bridge. Luckily, no one was injured.
