The police said that the identity of the woman could not be traced as the body was cut, completely burnt and stuffed in the suitcase.
Commissioner of Police, Salem City, Sanjay Kumar said that they were carrying out investigations in various angles as it is the main road to the Salem Steel Plant and also close to the railway junction.
Remains of the mutilated body were taken to the Government Hospital for a post-mortem. Suramangalam police said that focus was to identify the victim, which would help them unveil the mystery behind the brutal murder. It is also suspected that she could have been abducted from some other place and murdered.
Mani, a resident of the locality, said that on Tuesday afternoon they saw smoke emanating from the place where the body was found. “Though we grew suspicious, we took it lightly as chicken stall owners used to burn waste amidst thorny bushes, in the open place. On Wednesday there was an unbearable foul smell from the place and we were shocked to see the body,” he said.
