Following the Supreme Court’s order to close the liquor outlets on national highways, a TASMAC shop near the National Highways at Airavathanallur was closed and officials had planned to relocate it inside a rice mill in the village. This decision was met with stiff resistance from the locals. They said that the rice mill was located in the midst of the residential area.

Residents said that if the outlet was located inside the village, the number of alcoholics would increase and there is a possibility of school students becoming addicted to liquor. The protesters raised slogans against officials and warned them that if the outlet was set up inside the village despite a stiff opposition from them, they would torch it.

Later, officials rushed to the spot and promised the protesters that the TASMAC outlet would not be set up inside the mill. Following the assurance, the protest was withdrawn.
