Once again girls outshone boys in TN SSLC exams, marginal increase in overall pass percentage

As has been the norm over the years, girls once again outshone boys in the Secondary School Leave Certificate (SSLC) board exams conducted by the Tamil Nadu Government, results of which were announced today.

The overall pass percentage this year was 94.4 per cent, which was marginally 0.8 per cent higher than last year.

The lone transgender, who took the exams, also passed out successfully.

Of the total 9.82 lakh students, who appeared for the exams through schools across the State, girls outscored boys with a pass percentage of 96.2 per cent as against 92.5 per cent by boys. 

Last year the pass percentage among girls and boys stood at 95.9 and 91.3 respectively. 

A total of 9,82,097 students (4,90,870 boys and 4,91,226 girls and a transgender) appeared for the exams held in March this year of which 9,26,711 cleared it - a pass percentage of 94.4 per cent. 

Like in Plus-two results, the School Education Department has done away with the long followed practice of ranking students at the State and district levels in SSLC exams also on the basis of aggregate of marks secured by them with a view to providing relief to students going through high stress levels.

A total of 38,613 students scored above 481 marks out of 500, 1,22,757 students scored between 451-480, 1,13,831 students, including a transgender scored between 426-450 and 1,11,266 scored marks between 410 to 425. 

Among the top five districts, Virudhunagar was on the top of the leader board with the highest pass percentage of 98.55 per cent, followed by Kanniyakumari 98.17 per cent, Ramanathapuram (98.16), Erode (97.97), and Tuticorin (97.16).

Chennai district stood in the 22nd place with a pass percentage of 93.86 per cent.

Cuddalore district finished last with a pass percentage of 88.74 per cent. 

Incidentally, Virudhunagar topped the list and Cuddalore finished in the last in the Plus two exams also. 

While none of the students scored centum in English (51 last year), the number of centums in Tamil language came down marginally to 69 this year as against 73 last year.

The number of centums in Maths and Science also dipped this year. While 13,759 students secured centums in Maths (18,754 last year), a total of 17,481 students got 100 out of 100 in Science as against 18,642 last year.

However, there has been a significant increase in the number of centums in Social Science with a record 61,115 students getting full  marks when compared to 39,398 students last year. 

Of the total 12,188 schools, 5,059 schools secured 100 per cent pass.

In respect of government schools, 1,557 out of 5,463 schools registered cent per cent pass percentage.
