Sources said that the fire broke out on the premises reportedly due to an electrical short-circuit. Products worth several crores of rupees were destroyed in the blaze.

Sivas Enterprises located in Ukkadai in Ariyamangalam here was the wholesale dealer of fertilizers and pesticides of Godrej company. The firm has a godown adjacent to its shop from where farming commodities were being delivered to Tiruchy Ariyalur, Perambalur, Karur, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai districts.

In the early hours on Saturday, neighbours noticed a big ball of smoke billowing out of the godown and soon, the fire engulfed the entire premises. Since the stocks were chemical-based products, fire spread quickly and destroyed the godown completely.

On information, fire and rescue services personnel from Tiruchy, Tiruverumbur, BHEL and Srirangam rushed to the spot and doused the fire. However, there was no casualty or injury to anybody, said Radhakrishnan, owner of the firm.

Though the cause for the fire was yet to be ascertained, officials claimed that an electric short circuit might have caused the fire.
