According to police, Jayaseelan, an officer with the Canara Bank, lodged a complaint with the Lawspet station that 90 sovereigns of gold ornaments kept in his almariah were missing since May 27. Police registered a case and constituted a special team. The fact that the doors of the house were not broken and even the almariah was intact, the missing of ornaments drew the attention of the police to frequent visitors to the house. Following this, police inquired about the friends of Jayaseelan’s son Deepak who used to visit the house often and came to know that Dilip Kumar (19) was a regular visitor.

Police took him into custody and interrogated him. Dilip Kumar confessed to the stealing of the ornaments along with his friends. He informed the police that they pledged the ornaments and went on a tour of Goa, Ooty and Kodaikkal with other friends.

Police said that Deepak and Dilip Kumar, studying in second year B.Tech at a private engineering college, were friends for a long time. Deepak used to show off his ornaments to Dilip Kumar. Dilip Kumar used to steal small ornaments, which went unnoticed. As he was well aware of the place where the key of Deepak’s house was being kept, he stole the 90 sovereigns on May 27.

Along with his friends vikki, Arumugham, Ajay and Ramji, he then pledged the ornaments.
