Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ahead of 18th India-Russia annual summit in St Petersburg amidst New Delhi’s concerns over Moscow’s increasing cooperation overtures to Islamabad.

It is for the first time that the India-Russia annual summit at the highest political level is being held outside the Russian capital, since the first such summit in 2000. St Petersburg is popularly called the “cultural capital” of Russia.

During his three-day stay in St Petersburg, Modi will also address the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) and visit Piskarovskoye Cemetery to honour those, who lost their lives during the Siege of Leningrad (1941-1944).

During the summit, the two leaders are expected to discuss, among other subjects, bilateral defence and energy cooperation, counter-terrorism and situation in Afghanistan.
