Petitioner, KK Ramesh, a lawyer from Madurai, had stated that TASMAC shops had earned a revenue of Rs 30,000 to the state government. Recently, the Supreme Court had banned liquor shops situated on state and national highways.
Following the order, the state government had decided to shift the shops to other areas. However, this move had been widely opposed by the people especially women. In many of the protests the TASMAC outlets were vandalised and liquor bottles damaged. This had let to wasting of public property and money.
Though he had sent petitions to the state government demanding action against the protesters who had damaged the shops, there was no action, and hence he had pleaded the Court to direct the state government to take action against the protesters. The petition was heard, on Friday, and a division bench had directed the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Director General of Police and Chairman of TASMAC to file their counter affidavit by July 3.
