“We have to consider the fact that many top deemed universities like VIT and SRM conduct their own entrance tests and they do not bother about the class 12 results of the students,” says educationalist S. Somasundaram, who adds, ‘There is still demand for engineering among students.”
Around 9 lakh students took the exams this year, out of which more than 8 lakh students passed. “There are 2.5 lakh engineering seats available through counselling but many students get restless as counselling is time consuming and they are not sure of the cut-off.
They opt for seats through management quota where they end up paying a lot of money,” says another educationist. Students too are looking beyond engineering and explore other career options.
Eighteen-yearold Amit says, “I scored 400 in my CBSE class 12 exam but I don’t want to spend money joining engineering in a department I am not interested in. I want to become an IAS and I plan to graduate in English and simultaneously prepare for UPSC.” Online registrations TNEA started on May 1and the last day was on May 31.
