“This is the first time that an elephant has killed four people in a day in Tamil Nadu,” Conservator of Forests for Coimbatore Circle, I Anwardeen, said. District Forest Officer (DFO) S Ramasubramaniam told DTNext that forest personnel had been keeping track of the 20-year-old jumbo since Sunday.

Two teams lost track of it late  Thursday night at Madukkarai Market, about three km from the Madukkarai reserve forest. The girl, V Gayathri of Ganesapuram near Podanur, was sleeping in front of the house when she was trampled to death. Two tranquilisers and a kumki Paari (39) enabled the capture of the jumbo, which was finally loaded onto a truck to be taken back to the forest.
