Police said that Kannan, a painter, from Idaiyapatti, used to be out of station most of the days. His wife, Panchavarnam, took care of the family in his absence. Recently, Kannan was informed that Panchavarnam was in an illegal relationship with Vinoth, from Valayapatti near Peraiyur.

When Kannan enquired Panchavarnam, she refuted the allegation. Kannan had warned her not to talk with Vinoth.

On Tuesday, Kannan had sent both of his children along with his mother to a temple festival in the nearby village and the couple was alone in the house. At 3.30 am, Kannan realised that his wife was missing. When he went out, he saw Panchavarnam talking to someone.

On seeing Kannan, the person ran away and Panchavarnam returned home. When the couple was having breakfast around 8.30 am the next day there ensued a fight between them. Suspecting Panchavarnam’s fidelity, Kannan hacked her to death. Then he surrendered to the Othakadai police.

Nagaiyapuram police have registered a murder case and arrested Kannan.
