According to party HQ speaker Nanjil Sampath, Jayakumar’s statement had aroused the EPS camp, which felt it as a rank betrayal of their faction. Nearly 60 MLAs expressed their opposition to Jayakumar. Of them, 32 legislators claimed loyalty to Dinakaran.
It was more evident when the MLAs started flocking to the residence of the party deputy general secretary, who is out on bail. Some of the legislators also demanded that ministers, P Thangamani and SP Velumani, also be removed as they were present when Jayakumar made the statement to the media.
It may be recalled that Jayakumar, earlier offered to resign his post so that his portfolios could be given to members of the rival group headed by former chief minister O Panneerselvam. This was perceived as a placatory move by his side at the time to ensure that both factions were united.
Jayakumar had always been allotted the fisheries portfolio because of his expertise in that field. He was allotted the portfolios of finance, legislative assembly, elections and passports, personnel and administrative reforms (training) portfolios by Chief Minister Palanisamy on February 22 this year.
