State Electricity Minister P Thangamani inaugurating the new scheme on Monday said, “Both low tension and commercial users can avail of the scheme.”
Stating that the entire process could be done online, once an applicant had all necessary documents ready, the minister said the scheme included three phase power connections also.
“Both rural and urban consumers will benefit from the scheme, as there is no ceiling on allotments,” he added. Asked about frequent power outages, the Minister said that the state had been declared a power surplus one since June 2015.
“Some of the outages might be due to local disruptions. Repairs in transformers would take a minimum of two hours to fix and such disconnections were wrongly labelled as power outage,” he said. He further said that the state’s surplus power of 3,000 MW enables maintenance work to be taken in the hydro units.
However, incidents like boiler leakage in the Vallur Thermal Unit were not anticipated and hence took time to rectify, the Minister added.
Speaking on the green corridor to evacuate power generated by the wind mills in the state, he said Centre’s clearance was anticipated; but even otherwise, Tamil Nadu was evacuating power from wind mills for use.
Referring to violations, he said continuous monitoring and surprise checks resulted in the realisation of nearly Rs 5 crore as fines, he added.
