The repair and relaying works at the Pamban road bridge were carried out by the National Highways Department a month before and ever since the work commenced, there were 13 accidents, including two fatal ones in a month. Local people and activists blamed the slippery nature of the newly-relaid road for the accidents and demanded the officials to relay it again.

On Sunday evening, the Minister inspected the road and the damaged lamp posts on the bridge. Following the inspection, he said that the road repair and relaying works had commenced a month ago.

The road was relaid using the latest technology which involved the use of plastics and other materials along with tar.  But people had informed him that the road was slippery and was a cause for accidents. He said he would discuss the problem with the officials and assured to repair the damaged lamp posts on the bridge. He said that as a large number of vehicles ply on the bridge daily, it is subjected to wear and tear.

This damages the structure and so a new technology was adopted to lay a lighter bridge. But they did not expect frequent accidents. But he pointed out that accidents can be avoided if motorists stick to a speed limit of 30 kmph.
