With this, Tiruchy will get a direct air connectivity to one more overseas destination - Thailand, besides Singapore, Malaysia, Colombo, Dubai and Sharjah.

According to airport officials, on an average, Tiruchy international airport handles at least 5,000 passengers a day and the new service to Thailand is expected to improve the status of the airport at all levels.

Sources said that Thai AirAsia is a joint venture of Malaysian lowfare airline AirAsia and Thailand’s Asia Aviation. It serves AirAsia’s regular scheduled domestic and international flights from Bangkok and other cities in Thailand.

Airport authorities said that the maiden flight is expected to arrive on August 12 at 12 (midnight) and resume its return journey after an hour, that is at 1 am. As several people travel to Thailand through connecting flights via Kuala Lumpur, the direct flight will come as a boon to the frequent flyers.

A senior official at the airport said, “The Air Asia flight will be running a 180-seater narrow-bodied flight to meet the existing standards at the Tiruchy international airport. The booking for the flight is yet to take off as there are a few technical issues to be settled.” Similarly, talks are under way to bring in more airlines companies to operate services to a few more international destinations, the official added.
