Arun Dhandapani retired from the Sivaganga Medical College Hospital. Later, he started a private hospital with an attached scan centre. There were complaints that he had been revealing the sex of the foetus to the parents and had been making money.
As the practice of revealing the sex of the foetus is a crime under Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act of 1994, there were several complaints lodged with the District Health Department about him.
An expert committee of three members in the rank of Joint Directors were formed and the team comprising Sivaganga JD Vijayan Madhamadakki, Madurai JD Rukmani, Chennai JD Gurunathan inspected the hospital on Thursday. They found the complaints to be true and the team also noticed that the person operating the scan centre was not trained. They sealed both the scan centre and the hospital.
