NCB seizes 5kg drugs in Tiruchy airport

Based on a tip off that huge quantity of drugs was being smuggled via Tiruchy airport to Malaysia, the NIB sleuths kept a watch on passengers heading for international destinations at the Tiruchy airport from Sunday night.  

When the officials were checking the baggage of passengers bound for Malaysia by Malindo Airlines around 1 am, they detained a passenger identified as R Govindamurthy (37) of Vasantham Nagar in Madurai, on suspicion.  During a thorough check of his baggage, officials found a packet concealed in his trolley bag containing a white substance.  

When inquired, Govindamurthy told the officials that it was a health mix to be handed over to a relative in Malaysia. Not convinced with his explanation, the officials tested the substance and found out that it was amphetamine - a banned and sedative substance. 

The substance in the packet weighed around 5 kg and was said to be worth around Rs 5 crore in the international market. The current price is 13 Euros for one gram amphetamine (1 euro = 72 INR). 

Subsequently, the officials arrested Govindamurthy and seized the contraband.  Later, he was produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court I and was lodged in the Tiruchy central prison.
