Replying to the debate on demand for grants for his department on Wednesday, municipal administration and water supply minister S P Velumani said the Rs 93.77 crore pipe laying work connecting the 1 tmcft reservoir to Krishna canal has been progressing and efforts were being made to complete it before November.
He also reiterated that the revised DPR has been prepared for 150 mld desalination plant at Nemmeli and tenders have been floated for the plant. The proposed Rs 1,259 crore desal plant would be second in Nemmeli where Chennai metro water has been running a 100 mld for a few years now.
Making a brief comparison of the ministry during AIADMK and previous DMK tenures, the minister claimed that Chennai Corporation areas were only supplied 597 mld (million litres per day) and it was maintained at 830 mld during the golden rule of late J Jayalalithaa, a subtle admission that they had also scaled down the daily water supply by nearly 30% in Chennai Corporation limit.
