It is said that four women, R Baby (50), S Maheswari (52), N Kamalam (51) and M Laxmi (53), belonging to the DK, as part of their outfit’s practice carried the body of a party cadre to the graveyard in Kurukkathi.

While they were returning after completing the rituals, they were reportedly attacked by two local youth. According to A Panneerselvam, block secretary of DK, B Kowsalyadevi, wife of a local DK activist Bava Jayakumar passed away on Tuesday night.

“Our cadre visited Jayakumar’s house. It is practice in the DK that if any member belonging to the outfit dies, other cadre, including women, will carry the body to the graveyard,” he said.

Similarly, the women members carried Kowsalyadevi’s body to Kurukkathi graveyard on Wednesday. “After, completing the final rituals, while we were returning, two local youth, Silambarasan and Kannadasan, verbally abused the women and attacked them for entering the graveyard,” said Panneerselvam.

While a few senior members of the outfit asked them to leave the spot, a few more youth joined the duo and began to attack the women for entering the grave yard. Later, the DK cadre lodged a complaint with the Kilvelur police station regarding the incident.

Based on a complaint from Ramlingam, husband of Baby, one of the women who carried the body, a case has been registered and a search is on for the youth.
