The incident happened in October, 2016, when the children, Yuvaraj and Pargavi, from Saruguvalaipatti near Melur, had died while playing outside their house. Police investigation had revealed that the children had consumed cakes mixed with rat poison.

Following that, the Melur Police had booked a case of suicide and closed the case. However, the father of the children, Raghavan, returned to their native from Dubai, and stayed back in the village. He found out that his wife, Ranjitha, was frequently speaking to someone over phone at midnight. When he had questioned her, she had not replied properly.

Elders in the village told Ragavan, that a youngster, Kalyan Kumar, had been visiting their house often. When the villagers caught him, he had confessed to his relationship with Ranjitha. Following that, Ragavan had fought with Ranjitha.

It was then Ranjitha revealed that she along with her paramour had murdered the children by serving cake laced with poison. She had also threatened Ragavan that if he intervened, they would murder him too.

Following the fight, Ranjitha had left the house and had started living with Kalyan Kumar. Ragavan then informed about the incident through petitions to the police department. The department opened the case after eight months. Presently, Ranjitha and Kalyan Kumar are absconding. It is said that they would be secured once investigation begins.
