State may sign MoU for shifting to LED fittings

The Union government’s EESL (Energy Efficiency Services Limited), a joint venture between NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation), REC (Rural Electrification Corporation), Power Grid Corporation and Power Finance Corporation, is expected to sign an MoU with the state government in the first fortnight of July to cater to a wider area and clientele, top officials told DTNext.

The MoU will include the EESL participation in converting streetlights into LED lights all over the state and provision of energy efficient agricultural pump sets as also solar pumps, officials added.

“The proposal has been forwarded to the state government by our head office. We also expect to have the official launch of the sale of LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs, fans and tube lights simultaneously,” officials added.

It may be recalled that EESL had a soft launch in Chennai when it opened outlets in TNEB offices for sale of its products a couple of months ago. Around 15 outlets were also opened in EB offices in Kancheepuram with plans to expand throughout the district.

“While only the Southern Railway had purchased 66,000 LED bulbs earlier, the soft launch led to EESL selling as on date 3 lakh bulbs, 79,036 tube lights and another 19,834 fans,” officials added.

Officials felt that the state backing through an official launch would enable sales of 30,000 to 40,000 bulbs daily as against the present daily sale of 3,000 to 5,000 LED bulbs.

“EESL aims to convert 3 crore inefficient bulbs with the LED variety and replace 35 lakh tube lights and 10 lakh fans in Tamil Nadu once the official launch empowers it with the necessary clout to take on the entire state,” the officials said.

They added, “This would, in turn, lead to an annual electricity bill savings of Rs 1,650 crore and energy savings of 416 crore kWh.”
