Kin blame hospital for teacher’s death during surgery

Tension prevailed at a private hospital at Thoothukudi, on Saturday, when a government school teacher had died during a surgery and the kin of the deceased staged a protest demanding action against the doctor who had performed the surgery and the hospital management.

The deceased identified as Shanmugapriya (27), teacher at Ariyalur Government Higher Secondary School, was admitted at the private hospital at Thoothukudi as she was suffering from intestinal problems. She underwent a surgery at the hospital on Saturday morning. Her husband Pugendra Selvan was from Vilathikulam in Thoothukudi district. 

In the middle of the surgery, the ailment became complicated and she died. When doctors informed her death to the family members, they became furious and tried attacking the doctor and the hospital. Then they staged a protest outside the hospital. 

Following that police rushed to the spot and pacified the protesters. During the protest, the kin informed Police that Shanmugapriya had died due to the negligence of doctors and they should be arrested. However, police had assured that action would be taken on the doctors and only after the assurance the protesters withdrew their protests.
