Sea cucumbers put back into sea

Three persons were arrested in three different incidents for smuggling 380 kg of sea cucumbers at Pamban near Rameswaram in Ramanathapuram district, on Sunday. However, 100 kg of sea cucumbers which were found alive, were put back into the sea.

In the first incident, when Marine police were patrolling the north jetty at Mandapam they checked a country boat and found 250 kg of sea cucumbers packed in 30 gunny bags. 

Ajmer Khan (27), who had the bags, was arrested and handed over to the Mandapam forest officials. In North Mandapam, when forest department officials stopped a bike on suspicion and checked the bag of Nagoor Meeran, they found 30 kg of sea cucumbers. 

Immediately, he was arrested and the sea cucumbers along with the bike were seized. Similarly, while patrolling the Northern coast, forest officials found 100 kg of live sea cucumbers in two tubs. 

Immediately, Asghar Ali, who was  transferring the sea cucumbers from a country boat to his vehicle, was arrested and the live cucumbers were put back into the sea from Mandapam bridge.
