After reviewing the Chennai Port, the Union Minister also took stock of the progress made in reviving the project of elevated road connecting Chennai Port and Maduravoyal after the state government gave concurrence for the modified alignment and design based on the recommendations of the expert committee set up by the Government of India.
“It was informed that the process for appointment of consultant for preparation of a Detailed Project Report is in the final stage by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and it is expected that the DPR will be completed within a period of four months,” the Minister said and expressed hope that the project could be awarded during the last quarter of the current year or first quarter of next year.
Expressing concern over the increasing number of accidents on the roads, Radhakrishnan asked the officials and contractors to make every possible effort to reduce accidents and fatalities. “It will be possible to award 500 km of new road projects costing about Rs 1,000 crore during the current year,” the Minister said.
While seeking the cooperation and assistance of the state government in implementation of the projects, he said, “A concrete action plan for acquisition of land, which is the prime requirement for any road project, is to be chalked out and monitored at regular intervals.”
