Nine ancient idols unearthed near Thalaivasal

The discovery came to light when villagers of Navakkuruchi near Thalaivasal dug up the soil at the Nayana Poorana Narayana Perumal temple premises to build an Anjaneyar temple. On Thursday, they  stumbled upon a boulder that had some inscriptions. 

After digging further on the sides they removed the boulder. They were shocked to see a secret chamber beneath it. They found nine idols there and brought the finding to the notice of revenue officials, following which Tahsildhar P Kesavan rushed there. 

In all, the idols weighed 144.025 kg and were handed over to the sub treasury at Attur. The smallest idol weighed 4 kg while the biggest 32 kg. Researchers are of the view that the idols could belong to the 15th or 16th century AD and that they could have been made during the Vijayanagara Dynasty. Officials said more details of the idols  would be known only after a detailed study.
