Chennai to get rain for 2 more days, says RMC

K Srikanth, a city-based weather blogger, said that there may be good rains in Chennai region on Thursday. “Western Ghats and catchment areas in the Cauvery basin have been receiving good showers in the last three days and the spell may continue for two more days. Though there is no new low-pressure in the Bay of Bengal, south west monsoon is active in the state,” the blogger added. 

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai has on Wednesday predicted scattered rains in Chennai and heavy rains in Western parts of Tamil Nadu. An official with the RMC said “An off-shore trough at mean sea level now runs from Maharashtra coast to North Kerala coast. Owing to this there will be widespread rain in city and in many parts of the state.”

The heavily flooded Kovai Courtallam waterfalls in Coimbatore District were closed to tourists indefinitely due to heavy rain in catchment areas. Forest department officials who announced the closure said the falls brought down stones and branches of trees. 

Till Wednesday morning, The Nilgiris received an average rainfall of 23.25 mm. Upper Bhavani recorded 113 mm, followed by Avalanche – 105 mm, G. Bazaar – 31 mm and Glenmorgan – 26 mm. The rains filled a few check dams and some tanks on the outskirts of the city. Parts of The Nilgiris and Valparai near Pollachi in Coimbatore District received heavy and moderate showers, on Tuesday and Wednesday. 

On Wednesday, several parts of The Nilgiris witnessed moderate showers coupled with heavy winds. Officials said that no untoward incidents were reported till Wednesday evening. But Gudalur and Pandalur received incessant rain on Wednesday. There was power failure throughout the day and trees had fallen in many places. While Gudalur received 107 mm, of rainfall Devala received 115 mm.
