Eight of the arrested protestors, in their bail petition, had stated that the people of Kadiramangalam had protested peacefully, but it turned violent after police lathi-charged them for their stir against leakage in ONGC pipes on June 30. Three policemen had also sustained injuries and following that, nine were arrested. The petitioners prayed that the charges framed against them were false and pleaded for bail.
The Public Prosecutor argued that the arrested protesters had initiated the aggression and were spreading false information about ONGC. Out of the three cops who had sustained injuries, one of them is still undergoing treatment. Hence, their bail plea should be denied. Counsel for the petitioners said that it was their right to protest and they had done so after obtaining prior permission. Also, the policemen were the first to cane the protesters. Hence, the court should grant bail to them, counsel pleaded.
Govt reply sought over Class 11 public exam
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the Secretary of School Education Department to file a counter affidavit for the petition which had sought to cancel the Government Order (GO) on Class 11 exams being made board exams. The case was adjourned to August 7. Petitioner KKRamesh, in his PIL, had stated that the state government, on May 22, had rolled out a GO which stated that Class 11 exams would be government exams and marks obtained in these would be used for college admissions. Declaring class 11 exams as public exams was unnecessary as students have already been preparing hard for their Class 12 board and Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations. If Class 11 exams also become board exams, it would unnecessarily put a lot of stress on the students.
