Tirupur MP seeks reduced GST on job works for textiles:
Tirupur MP V Sathyabama made a representation in person to Union Finance Minister (FM) Arun Jaitley in Delhi on Wednesday seeking reduction in GST for job orders on wearing apparels. She observed that the original GST rates for job works on textiles and apparels were fixed at 18 per cent. After representations from the industry to bring it down, it was fixed at 5 pc. But, this was applicable only for job works on cotton yarn and textile fabrics and wearing apparels were excluded.
She observed that this is a great setback for clusters like Tirupur as it has a huge volume of jobs in garments. She made an appeal to fix 5 pc GST as a standard across the textile manufacturing chain.
Dry fish too not spared: Vendors
Traditional dry fish workers from the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry organised a meeting here on Thursday to demand the government to withdraw the GST levied against dried fish. The vendors claim that inclusion of non-branded dried fish under taxable commodity is a new thing and they had stopped the trade. So far, business has been affected to the tune of Rs 20 crore, they claimed. “So far, non-branded dried fish varieties are exempted from tax as they are treated as perishable commodity. But, after implementation of GST, all types of dried fish have been included in the taxable list,”, said NPK Nazim, Coordinator of Federation of Fishermen and dried fish vendors association of Tamil Nadu.
