10 MLD more from Nemmeli desal plant for city soon

The decision was taken to address the looming water crisis in the city despite many technicalities involved in the stepping up of production from the existing plant.  Officials said that they are working on the plan to supply 10 MLD more from the plant, which supplies 100 MLD of water at present. 

But, they may have to face a tough time while carrying out the necessary works in the plant, as they have to suspend the plant for about a week to enable it to supply 10 MLD more, that too at a time when the city is facing an acute water crisis. 

The officials have no other option as the current water crisis is growing at an alarming rate in the city. They have already floated tenders for establishing of two new desalination plants, which are in the pipeline. 

“It will take nearly 30 months to complete the works on new plants,” said an official. “It is not that easy to increase the water supply from the desalination plants, as more technical works are involved. But, we have no other option, but to increase the supply. 

Further, we have communicated to the technical staff concerned to take up the works in Nemmeli plant at the right time,” said an engineer, CMWSSB, seeking anonymity.  

Once they start the technical works to step up the supply, the plant would be suspended and “this was the reason, why we had delayed it,” he reasoned. Similarly, another senior official maintained, “To a large extent, we are supplying water to the residents without any interruption. 

To further ensure regular supply, additional 10 MLD of water will be tapped from the desalination plant.”  When asked about the earlier proposal of setting up of new plants, the official replied, “The projects are in the pipeline and it will take at least two years to complete them.”
