At last, weeds removed from Uyyankondan

Meanwhile, the civic body plugged the drainage pipes that led to the river from various households as it was one of the main causes of pollution. According to the social activists, there has been a continuous littering of garbage from various households and hospitals along the Uyyankondan river. 

The activists therefore appealed to the district administration to save the river which irrigates at least 32,000 acre of land in the district on a war footing. 

According to the activists, the Uyyankondan river separates from the Cauvery at Pettaivaithalai. 

It flows through the city and reaches Boothalur after flowing for about 85 km. They pointed out that the river that flows clean until Puthur Weir becomes polluted when it crosses the court bridge where several hospitals exist. 

For instance, garbage including plastic waste and hospital waste, freely flow into it posing an environmental threat. Hearing the appeal, the district administration inspected the river and ordered for a mass cleaning drive and allotted a sum of Rs 4 lakh. 

Meanwhile, the district collector K Rajamani asked the Corporation Commissioner N Ravichandran to plug household sewage discharge to it. It is said, the civic body had identified 307 households which let the sewage into the canal.
