“The student, if he/she wants can drop maximum of two courses in the third semester and take the same subjects in the following semester. This is part of the Choice-based credit system, where the students can learn the subject at their own pace and also gain industrial experience,” said TV Geetha, Dean, College of Engineering, Guindy.
The college has also added new electives and is offering employability enhancement courses that apart from internship also include seminars, professional practices, summer project, case study and industrial/practical training. Apart from this, they have also introduced ‘Open Electives’ where students can choose a subject from other streams.
Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Sunil Paliwal had earlier mentioned that industrial training is an important part of a students’ curriculum and colleges must encourage students to not just do an internship but also plan a time-table that allows them to participate in the college fests and seminars.
Also, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said that it will now be mandatory for engineering students across the country to be involved in at least three internships during their course.
However, colleges say that they are not sure how they can accommodate three internships during college. “One internship and industrial training is compulsory in every engineering college. When a company comes for placements, they mostly look for these criteria, else students find it difficult to find a job. Some colleges also have a tie-up with companies where they send the students.”
Some educationists are concerned that while giving time for internship is a good idea but making three internships mandatory may not be a good move. An educationist, who didn’t want to be named, said, “There are several business houses which depend on the final-year projects of the students.
From the students point of view, if the internship is made mandatory, they will find a way to find one. Students also have to understand that if they perform well in the internship, they are likely to be hired by the same company.”
