Rains in Karnataka help bring Mettur dam level to 33 ft
With heavy rains in the catchment areas of Cauvery in Karnataka, the level of water in Mettur Dam that was 26.32 feet on Monday (July 23) climbed to 33.3 feet at 8 in the morning on Sunday. A senior PWD official at the dam said the inflow also crossed 7,000 cusecs on Sunday morning.

The official said that on Monday the dam had 26.32 feet of water against the full reservoir capacity of 120 feet. Water available at the dam was 6.14 TMC against the full reservoir capacity of 93.5 TMC and the inflow was 2,507 cusecs. On Sunday morning, water availability increased to 8.902 TMC while the inflow was 7,017 cusecs against the outflow of 500 cusecs.
“Water level is increasing at nearly two feet per day. Over the last one week around 10,000 cusecs has been released from Kabini Dam (6,000 cusecs) and Krishnaraja Sagar Dam (4,000 cusecs) into the Cauvery. After water for irrigation downstream in Karnataka and nearly 1,000 cusecs for drinking water for Bengaluru maximum inflow we can get is around 7,000 to 7,500 cusecs,” said the PWD official.
Stating that the outflow from the two reservoirs in Karnataka was in the range of 10,000 cusecs till Sunday, officials said that this would ensure that Mettur Dam receives close to 7,000 cusecs for at least one more week even if the release was stopped.
“If the current inflow continues, we can expect the water level to touch 40 feet on Aadi 18 (August 3),” the official added.
More showers should set in at the catchment areas in Karnataka for the dam to be ready to release water for Delta irrigation.
