The big tank which was the main source of water for around 40 villages around Thuraiyur, was filled with silt to a height of 9 feet and had rampant growth of Seemai Karuvelam trees in it. Also the four supply channels to the tank carrying excessive rain water from Pachamalai, Keerambur, and Maruvathur localities were in a bad shape.
The Thuraiyur big tank played little role in improving the groundwater level in the area. Therefore, members belonging to Thuraiyur Makkal Nala Sangam, Chamber of Commerce, and Ongarakudil raised Rs 20 lakhs and worked hard to bring the tank back to its pristine shape.
“We met all the officials from district collector to PWD officials to revive the tank but they delayed to address our grievance. So, we organised a committee on June 7 and decided to raise funds from residents, merchants and people from all walks of life. We commenced work after getting the official nod,” said S Kamaraj, Coordinator of Makkal Nala Sangam.
The tank was cleared on July 30 and a festival was organised at the tank. “A homam was performed for invoking the rain god and we had a good spell of rain in the evening,” Kamaraj said.
As part of the desilting drive, the centuries-old Manimandapam at the centre of the Thuraiyur big tank was spruced up by the locals. This tank is the largest water body in the ambit of Thuraiyur municipality which is being managed by the Ariyaru division of PWD.
