The Met department said the mild trough prevailing along the Bay of Bengal was the reason for the rain and heavy rain was likely to continue for the next two days. “An upper air trough runs from Telangana to Comorin area across Rayalaseema and interior Tamil Nadu and extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level. Also, another upper air cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Bay of Bengal off North Tamil Nadu coast at 3.1 km above mean sea level,’’ Met office sources said.

While Chennai city was lashed with heavy rains, some of the districts also received good showers. From Tuesday to Wednesday morning, Madurantakam recorded a maximum rainfall of 15 cm followed by Pullambadi which recorded 14 cm and Chengam, 13 cm. Chennai City would have cloudy skies with the possibility of a shower or two for the next two days, according to the Met department.
