The petitioner Vairakannan, an advocate, had already filed a petition seeking a probe into the illegalities and malpractices that occurred in the RK Nagar by- poll.
When the matter came up on July 14, a division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice N Seshasayee directed the Joint commissioner of Police (East) to monitor the case including registration of FIR and file a status report on August 23.
During the hearing, it was also pointed out that the EC on April 18 had directed the State Electoral Officer to lodge a police case against six people, including-AIAIDMK (Amma) deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran, Chief Minister Eddapadi K Palaniswami and Ministers K A Sengottaiyan, Sellur K Raju and P Thangamani over the alleged bribery of voters.
The bench on pursuing the report had also asked the police as to why no names figured in the FIR, when the Income Tax report clearly mentioned three names. The petitioner filed the additional affidavit stating that the allegation by him includes the CM. Stating that the state police portfolio comes under him, the Investigation cannot be expected to be fair.
