Bigg Boss dragged to court over content

Even as the Bigg Boss show hosted by actor Kamal Haasan is turning out to be the most-viewed reality show in Tamil Nadu, the Madras High Court has been moved seeking to restrain Vijay TV from telecasting the show, since it not only played with mental emotions and behaviours of the female contestants but also portrayed them in a ‘vulgar’ and ‘obscene’ manner.

The petitioner MR Saravanan has submitted that the programme dubbed as a reality show is playing with the mental emotions of not only the 15 contestants but also those who are watching it.

Hence, it has to be restricted as soon as possible. Citing the Supreme Court observation that air waves or frequencies are public property and their use must be controlled and regulated in public interest, the  petitioner said, “The dress code and behaviour of female contestants in the show are very vulgar and obscene making me and my family members extremely uncomfortable while watching it.”

“Also, the reference - Cheri (slum) behaviour - made by a participant to describe the actions of another contestant greatly hurts the downtrodden people,” said Saravanan in his PIL. He also insisted that the show must be subjected to censorship before telecast. He also noted that since his representation to the makers of the show on July 29 had failed to evoke any response, he had no other remedy but to approach the court.  The PIL, which has been given a provisional number by the High Court registry, is expected to be taken up for hearing on Monday.
