The victims were identified as Rajendran (50), a farmer, his wife Rani (45) and their younger daughter Aarthi (19) and son Naveen kumar (17). His eldest daughter Monika (21) graduated this year and his younger daughter Aarthi was a final year BA Literature student, while his son Naveen was studying in Class 11.
According to police, preliminary inquiries revealed that two years ago Manikandan (23), a distant relative from Periyakavundapuram, started taking betel nut leaves from Rajendran’s farm. He and Monika fell in love. The girl’s parents objected to it as they had high hopes for her.
However, on Thursday (August 3) Monika went missing. She got married to Manikandan on Friday. Meanwhile, unable to find the girl, Rajendran lodged a complaint with police on Saturday. The same day, Monika and Manikandan sought police protection.
Police informed Rajendran and asked both sides to settle the issue at Ethapur station. “But the girl said she feared that her parents would kill her,” their relative Shankar told DT Next.
Upset over the turn of events and threat to life complaint lodged by the daughter against him and his family, Rajendran’s family committed suicide.
