to those who flouted government norms. In order to regulate sand quarries, the state government had taken control of all the sand quarries across the state. However, irregularities continued and online booking was introduced. Despite all these measures, there were complaints that sand was being loaded after working hours.
Meanwhile, the single window online booking system was introduced in Tiruchy and the lorry drivers had reportedly given fake registration numbers for loading. Subsequently, registration of vehicles for booking was made after a thorough verification of documents. And the district administration organised a special camp for document verification.
As scheduled, the RTO officials verified the document on Monday in which over 100 lorries registered for online booking. The verification camp was inaugurated by the District Collector in the presence of Government Sand quarry Project Director Arun Thamburaj.
The Collector said, “Online registration was introduced to ensure strict adherence to government norms. “If the vehicles used fake documents or violated government norms, strict action would be taken against the offenders.
Farmers demand crop insurance
A section of farmers approached the district collector here on Monday and demanded that their crop insurance claims were yet to be disbursed. They charged that only two to five farmers in each village in the district have received the claims so far. There were many others too in the waiting.
Ayilai Sivasuriyan, district president of Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, approached the Collector K Rajamani. He said that the block development officers are alone entitled to recommend for crop insurance claims. But the officials are biased in recommending and therefore in each village, only two to five farmers have received the claims so far and the others are still waiting for their turn.
While everybody has equally suffered in farming activities, why should a few alone be considered for the claims, queued the farmers. This kind of partiality in recommending insurance claims for only a preferred few has irked the entire farming community, the petition read. Ayilai Sivasuriyan said that both the farmers who had skipped cultivation and those who lost their crops had paid the premium and so both sections of the farmers are entitled to get their claims.
The farmers also sought the district collector’s intervention in the issue and help them to get their dues. A similar petition was submitted in Thanjavur also.
