Bigg Boss Tamil: Madras HC asks Centre to clarify regulatory mechanism for TV contents

When the plea moved by Cine Saravanan seeking to ban the TV show citing obscenity came up before the first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar on Friday, a confusion arose as to whether the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council of India (BCCCI) or the Electronic Media Monitoring Committee (EMMC) is the body which has the enforcement right, the bench sought the assistant solicitor general Su. Srinivasan to clarify and posted the case for further hearing to August 18.

Earlier, P R Raman appearing on behalf of actor Kamal Haasan, who is anchoring the show, said the petitioner should have approached the BCCCI, a self-regulatory body set-up by the Indian Broadcasting Foundation in consultation with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, instead of moving the court. He said

the council comprising retired judges, theatre experts, child rights activists and others were competent to decide on such complaints. He also noted that the petitioner, who had called for a press conference on August 4 in this regard and moving the court the following day, is a clear indication that it is ‘publicity interest litigation.’
